At setup, I never got the “link to Origin account” message but I can get to the server screen i.e. load properly - but with a new player, not my saved BF3 soldier.

VU requires linking the Origin account at once, then you will be able to play without Origin being executed. Soldiers on VU are different from Battlelog soldiers and will not have shared progression data.
